Artist’s Statement Quilts - Jamie Murphy Hlynsky

The pieces in this series are the culmination of several years work. Each collage takes the form of a quilt. The quilt idea brings with it many associations. Domesticity, tradition, loving handwork, and a practical outlet for a woman's creativity. Jamie Hlynsky has made the decision to make these quilts out of paper. This essentially removes their functionality and their traditional material value. This gesture has eliminated the "reward" of use, and preciousness of heirloom and instead emphasizes the act of making the objects themselves. This act of making is both contemplative and meditative. For example in the making of the "labors of love" quilt, she chose to sew the quilt completely by hand, white thread on white paper towel. Each stitch represents the countless number of repeated and invisible tasks a mother and homemaker performs day after day for the comfort of her family. The series as a whole reflects upon the significance of the emotional, cultural and at times political stages in a woman's life from girlhood to Middle Age.
